San Lorenzo Church was the parish of the Medici, the place where all the members of the family were buried.
In the 16th century, Michelangelo built the New
Sacristy, with the fascinating tombs of Giuliano, Duke of Nemours and
Lorenzo, Duke of Urbino, together with the Laurentian Library, which
houses the collection of manuscripts of Lorenzo the Magnificient, one of
the richiest collections in the world. In the 17th century the Princes’
Chapel, covered with marble and semi-precious stones, became the burial
place of the Grand-Dukes of Tuscany.
